Ep. 146 — How Tela Holcomb Doubled Her 401(k) In 6 Months and "Traded" Her Way to Financial Independence

Tela Holcomb, is a self-described "mom, wife, six-figure stocks and options trader, 9 to 5 survivor, risk taker and freedom catcher." But she wasn't always a stock trading wiz. It wasn't until Tela lost her job in 2012 that she decided to dive into learning all she could about the stock market. Today, Tela supports herself on income she earns from a combination of short-term stock trading and long-term investing and saving, as well as income earned from teaching online courses on how to trade. She joins Brown Ambition today to offer tips* for beginner investors looking to get into the market — and gets real about what it really means to trade, day trade and invest (yep! they are all different). From purchasing her first stock (Coach!) to making $12,000 in three days to losing $7,000 in the blink of an eye, Tela opens up about the good, the bad and the ugly side of the market and how you can avoid common pitfalls. "Start with the products and services you know because it's going to motivate to you to keep going. How a Brain Aneurysm Became a Blessing

In September 2016, Sharon Epperson was at the gym when she felt a relentless, migraine-like pain shoot through her head and neck. One S.O.S. call to her husband and several hours in the hospital later, she learned she was one of 30,000 people in the U.S. who suffer a brain aneurysm rupture each year. Two in five die instantly and African Americans are twice as likely as whites to suffer from one. Sharon, who is the senior personal finance correspondent at CNBC, was one of the lucky ones. On today’s show, she calls the experience one of the great blessings of her life and shares her story with Mandi, including: Her early days in rehabilitation when she had to relearn everyday tasks. “That road had so much pain on it. There were people in those rooms who I know probably wouldn’t make it…I remember thinking I just have to look at the door straight ahead. If I look in these rooms I’m going to fall down.” What it was like to return the air at CNBC after 13 months of rehabilitation. “I am recovered in that I can do that job but I’m doing it differently and better than I’ve ever done it before.” The financial choices she made that protected her family’s finances during her recovery and time off from work. “There couldn’t have been a rainier day for my rainy day fund. The fact that I had an emergency fund was key. It meant I didn’t have to do what many people may have to do which is dip into a 401(k) or their retirement savings to pay for a medical bill.”  The key steps Sharon says everyone should take to protect their families if they become disabled —Build an emergency fund —Sign up for disability insurance —Secure a power of attorney Learn more about brain aneurysm research here: bafound.org (This episode originally aired April 18, 2018) Learn more about your ad choices. Ep. 198 — How Tiffany Made Her First $1 Million as The Budgetnista

On today's show, Tiffany opens up about the revenue streams that make up The Budgetnista's seven-figure business. How does an influencer really make money anyway? At this point, The Budgetnista's origin story is pretty legendary. When Tiffany lost her job after the 2008 recession, she started The Budgetnista, a financial coaching business, while living on her sister's couch and piecing her own financial life back together. Through word-of-mouth she got new clients looking for help getting their budgets on track but there was just one problem — she often felt too guilty to charge them money for her services, knowing they were already struggling financially. "I wanted to help as many people as possible without being a financial burden on them," she says on today's episode. Starting a business without wanting to charge fees wasn't exactly the most obvious business choice, but she was determined to find a way to make it work.  A decade later, The Budgetnista is now a multi-seven-figure business, despite Tiffany's mission to continue giving value away to her community for free and to never to charge the people who need help the most more than they can afford. "I took the long meandering route to entrepreneurship and I took the route of building trust, building community and the truth is now 10 years in ... It still blows me away [that I've been successful.]"  Support Brown Ambition by supporting our sponsors! HoneyBook is offering our listeners 50% off when you visit Honeybook.com/brownambition. Ep 224 - Get Out of the Drama Triangle

This week we're doing something a little different. Instead of answering questions, we're following up! Awhile back, a listener asked a question about negotiating salary during the pandemic. We gave her some advice, and this week she followed up to let us know how things went. Also a few weeks back, Tiffany shared her story about learning what the drama triangle is. She talked about learning how to set boundaries and say no. A listener heard that story and wrote in to talk about her situation and how it helped. How do you get into your zone of genius? Tiffany's business coach has her whole team figuring out the intersection of what they're good at and what they love doing. She's already seeing returns. I got a job offer right out of school in the middle of this pandemic. But the company has said nothing about the current moment in BLM movement. Should I take this job? My company has said/done nothing in support of BLM, then sent a company wide letter asking people to be mindful of “certain conversations”. Should I say something? Ep 239 - Ownership = Wealth

Before we begin this week, we need to have word about knowing what you're worth. Its Covid and times are tough, but some people (big companies) are acting wild trying to take advantage of people. Also you'll remember awhile back, a listener wrote in asking about draining her 401k to pay off her debt. The BA fam cam through and someone offered to buy a grocery card for her (25:40). Y'all are amazing. Then it's on to your questions. This week we've got: (28:22) I’m shopping for a home, I’m trying to decide if I should take on a renovation project. How do you find a good Reno team that will do a good job and not take advantage of you? (38:12) Is a 529 plan a good way to save for college for my 2 year old granddaughter? Ep 241 - Trouble Don't Last Always

Election day is over. All that's left is for us to send some love to our future selves and hope things haven't gotten too wild. We're trying to focus on what's good. Like the fact that 115 BIPOC women are running for election this year! (8:47). And at least we know where people stand. It's no longer impolite to talk politics, and honestly we're here for that. Regardless of what happens in the election, let's take a minute to breathe, then get ready to get back to work. Because there's much more to do. In the meantime, we're here to answer your money questions! This week we'll talk about: (20:57) I have about $4,300 of credit card debt between two cards with high interest. Is it a good idea to get a personal loan with a lower interest rate to consolidate that debt? (26:20) - I own 4 timeshares, but now I realize they’re a waste of money. Ep 242 - Black Magic Everywhere

It's over! And we're breathing, at least a little. We made it y'all. It's been along four years, but Black folks (Black women specifically) pulled through and helped take this thing over the top for us. We hope wherever you are, you're able to relax and release some tension. But work is NOT over! There are two really important runoff elections happening in Georgia (16:20). These elections will help determine control of the Senate, and that could make a HUGE difference for what the next two years (at least) look like. Here's a great article describing how you can help even if you don't live in Georgia. Let's WORK. And we've got some great questions from you guys this week too: (38:54) I’ve got 40k in the stock market, should I pull some of that money out for a down payment on a house? (46:28) Yesterday I was fired from my new job. I experienced so much hate from the white women in the office, I think because of the election. Do you know anywhere I can go work and feel safe as a black woman? Ep 243 - Can I Save When It Doesn't Seem Like There's Enough?

We're still out of breath from the election, but we are breathing a little easier. But Covid-19 is on the rise again and the holidays are coming up. It's going to be a hard year for family gatherings (or lack thereof). We hope you stay safe and give yourself some time off if you can. But we still need to find time to celebrate the good things. And one super good thing we can celebrate is Tiff released the cover for her book, Get Good With Money (2:15)! The book is coming in March 2021. But in the meantime you take the financial wholeness quiz to see how close you are to being financially whole. We've got some great questions for you this week like: (25:00) I’m just having a lot of trouble saving money. Is it actually possible for me to save money when there just doesn’t seem to be enough? (31:20) I own a home that’s in need of a LOT of work. I took a home equity loan for the repairs. I haven’t spent the money yet because of the pandemic. Should I hold onto that money or go ahead with the repairs? Ep 244 - How Can I Avoid Being The Victim of a Racist Appraiser?

And just like that it's time for all the holidays! We've got Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and even birthday celebrations to plan. Like everything else this year, Covid is making it way too complicated (seems like there are vaccines on the way though! (9:35). We're making it work thought like we ALWAYS do. So whatever you're doing this season, please stay happy, safe, and spend some time with people you love. Safely! We've got some great questions from you all this week like: (19:50) How can I make sure I’m not the victim of a racist appraiser? (28:11) What’s your perspective on taking some money out of a savings account and putting it towards stocks or an ETF? (30:47) I have $1,000 left on my car note, I have a o% interest credit card balance transfer at $10,000, and $6,000 on a high interest credit card. I’ve been focusing more on paying down debt during the pandemic. My car loan will be paid off in December and I’m wondering how best to allocate those funds. Should I pay down more debt or save? In the meantime we're so excited to hear that a lot of you are taking charge of your mental health by reaching out to our friend Stephanie over at NaviPsych (not a sponsor, we just love her) or otherwise getting into therapy, and we want to send our love to all of you. Wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons! We've got some great questions this week like: (21:20) - I have 10k saved for my wedding, but I don’t think we’ll get married for awhile, where should I store this money? (28:50) - Neither of my parents have life insurance or health insurance, and they don’t have any money set aside for retirement. Ep 246 - A New Season of Self Care

It's the holiday season, but its the season for other things too. It's always a good time to look at the things in our lives that seem little (that achey-but-not-too-bad arm?) but might turn into something big. Why not take care of it before it gets out of control? Whether its your money or some other thing in life, you're worth it. It's time to start acting like it! We got some great questions from you this week: (23:44) - How do I get better odds of getting a balance transfer credit card that will cover the full amount of my debt? (28:23) - I have 40,000 dollars in savings and I’m not sure what to do with it. Is there a better place than my savings account? Ep 247 - How Can I Pay Off Debt on a Fixed Income?

Our self care journeys continue. Sometimes self care is more than a massage or your favorite cocktail. Sometimes it's therapy. Sometimes it's sitting in your car by yourself with your favorite drink. Whatever it means for you, we hope you're taking good care of yourself. The end of the pandemic is in sight, but we still have to get through the holidays and the first part of next year. It's still going to be hard, and you still deserve to be okay. In the meantime, we're going to keep bringing you money and career advice. There are some great questions this week like: (26:56) How can I pay off 20k in debt on a fixed income? (34:13) I’m 25 and I’m graduating with 2 masters degree. I received a job offer, but I’m afraid I might’ve asked for too little money. I had a great interview for a promotion with my current employer, and that might offer more money. I’m stressed out over what to do! As you finish up your holiday shopping, don't forget: You can save 25% at our merch store by using the coupon code HOHOHO. Good through the end of December! In this year especially, its great to support local and small businesses. One of our favorites right now is The Butter Bar skincare (not a sponsor, we just love them). We're taking a look back at 2020 and talking about the good things that happened for us this year. We're also taking a look forward at 2021 and talking about what we're trying to do next year. Last but certainly not least, we're getting a new stimulus bill (2:45) soon, and we'll be telling you what is (and isn't in there). And because it's our favorite thing, we're still answering your questions this week! (35:43) I’m very unhappy in my current job. I have some money in savings and some in a 401k. Should I put my health first and quit my job now? Or should I wait until I secure something else? (41:48) I recently got a new job and lost all the sick time I had saved up. I want to start a family with my partner. I want to spend as much time with my new baby as possible. This week we're bringing you a re-broadcast of our interview with Jaspreet Singh of The Minority Mindset YouTube channel. But he didn’t let that stop him and he’s now built The Minority Mindset into a YouTube channel with over 650,000 subscribers, a popular newsletter, and more. This conversation was another highlight of our year, and we're excited to share it with you again. Keep an eye out soon for new episodes. Be well, and happy new year! Ep 249 - Really, 2021?!

Welcome to 2021, BA Fam. To say the least, we are still reeling from the attack on our nation's capitol last (and DEMOCRACY ... and REALITY?) last week —OK, let's be real here the entire last four years. It was tough to find the words for this, y'all, but we are here to vent (a lot) with you and try to unpack what this means for the year to come. We're doing the best we can to take care of ourselves and each other, and sometimes that's all we can do. But most importantly, Brown Ambition is back in business for 2021, talking about self-care, career, personal finance, and empowerment. We got some great questions this week: 28:53 - Can you really take online surveys as a side hustle? 32:52 - What's the key to finding good virtual assistants for your business? Ep 250 - Taking Black Women to Higher Heights w/Special Guest Glynda Carr

We missed y'all last week! And this week is a bit of a different show. We've talked before on the show about the amazing organization Higher Heights. They're a 501(c)(3) that is building a national civic engagement infrastructure and network to strengthen Black women’s leadership capacity. This week we're talking to one of the founders of Higher Heights, Glynda C Carr. In this interview we'll learn: (6:10) How Black women have been the architects of our democracy (8:45) Just how big a deal is it that we have Kamala Harris as our Vice President now? (19:12) What's at stake for us if we don't get more involved at the local levels? (21:15) If you want to get more involved but don't necessarily want to run for office, how do you do that? (33:28) Now that we're past the general election, how do we keep this current energy going? And more! This was an amazing conversation and we're so excited to share it with you! Ep 251 - I Got Promoted Without a Raise! Help!

We've got NEWS! BA has officially joined the Westwood One podcast network (5:43). We're so excited and grateful for the opportunity they're giving us to continue growing and reaching more people. A LOT happened while we were gone, so let's get into it... What in the world happened with Gamestop? What does it mean to "short" a stock? Did a reddit meme just make a whole bunch of people rich? We've got the tea. (11:44) We're sure you know about Tiffany's book by now. Its called Get Good With Money: 10 Simple Steps to Becoming Financially Whole. And now you can pre-order it! Go get it now right here: https://getgoodwithmoney.com/ (50:13) And we're back to answering your questions this week. We've got some great ones: 32:29 - How does Tiffany take apple cider vinegar and why? 34:09 - My job just promoted me without giving me a pay raise. They said this was the position I was meant to have all along, but I never signed anything saying that. I’m not in a position to quit right now. Help! 40:08 - I have two 401ks from previous companies. Should I roll them over during the current economy, or should I leave them where they are? Also my company doesn’t have a match. D*ve R*msey put his whole entire foot in his mouth on F*x N*ws last week — LET THE DRAGGING COMMENCE (3:11). Tiffany has some thoughts about that (7:20). We also take a question from a listener named Jane (29:25). Jane wants to leave her job to start her own business, and she's got a few questions about how to get financially ready for that. After we take a second to give her a round of applause for doing an amazing job with her finances thus far, we get to talking about how hard the life of an entrepreneur can be. Do you need to quit your job to start your business (31:10)? Is it okay to contribute a little less to your 401k (34:20). There's a lot to think about here, and Tiff gets real real about it (45:20). He was taken out by our friends Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings of Earn Your Leisure. Shine on!
